Here's my first contribution, a Tim Roth filmography. I got this from The Internet Movie Site, whose URL I don't recall. Of these I've only seen _Four Rooms_, _Pulp Fiction_, _Reservoir Dogs_, _Rob Roy_, and _The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover_. Of these, I would say that Reservoir Dogs is unquestionably my favorite. Of the ones I haven't seen, which would you recommend? 1. Four Rooms (1995) .... Ted the bellboy 2. Rob Roy (1995) (S:AAN) (S:GGN) .... Cunningham 3. Captives (1994) .... Philip Chaney 4. Heart of Darkness (1994) (TV) .... Marlow 5. Little Odessa (1994) .... Joshua Shapira 6. Pulp Fiction (1994) .... Pumpkin 7. Bodies, Rest & Motion (1993) .... Nick 8. Murder in the Heartland (1993) (TV) .... Charles Starkweather 9. Common Pursuit (1992) (TV) .... Nick 10. Marido Perfecto, El (1992) .... Milan ... aka Perfect Husband, The (1992) 11. Reservoir Dogs (1992) .... Mr. Orange 12. Backsliding (1991) .... Tom Whitton 13. Jumpin' at the Boneyard (1991) .... Manny 14. Farendj (1990) 15. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1990) ..... Guildenstern 16. Vincent & Theo (1990) .... Vincent van Gogh 17. Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, The (1989) .... Mitchel ... aka Cuisinier, le Voleur, sa Femme et son Amant, Le (1989) ... aka Spica (1989) 18. To Kill a Priest (1988) .... Feliks ... aka Complot, Le (1988) 19. World Apart, A (1988) 20. The URL for the previous filmography is: http://www.msstate.edu/M/person-exact?Roth,%20Tim I've seen Four Rooms, Rob Roy, Heart of Darkness, Little Odessa, Pulp Fiction, Bodies Rest and Motion, Reservoir Dogs, RAGAD, and CTWL. Of these I would have to say that my favorite is RAGAD (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead). It is a great comedy and you see a different side of Tim (his comedic one which was left unexplored in 4 Rooms). Gary Oldman is in it also and he is almost but not quite as cool as Tim. Has anyone found a copy of Metamorphosis out there? I've been looking but... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brian's most recent ineffective pick up line: "Excuse me... would you mind terribly if I built my life around you?" -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Mar 1996 13:34:46 -0800 (PST) From: "Jennifer H. This is the first list I've managed, so I thought I'd apologize in advance for any delays or screw-ups in the list. Things are just starting out, so expect everything to be rather slow. Finally, please post any ideas/features you'd like to have. I have the list set up to automatically archive all the posts, so after they begin to accumulate I can deposit them someplace. I think that I can generate statistics for the list as well, but those won't be interesting until the list gets larger. Here are some things that I'd like to find/know: 1) I haven't been able to find any articles about Tim Roth, other than the occasional "1 page with picture" spreads. I heard that there was an article in Details magazine around 1993, but have never seen it. If anyone knows the cites of any articles I'd be happy to look them up and type them in. 2) The Internet Movie Database bibliography says this about him: "He bears tattoos on his right arm for significant events in his life. He currently has 5 such tattoos." Anyone have any idea what these tatoos are of, and what events they are for? "'*-._,_.-*'"'*-._,_.-*'"'*-._,_.-*'"'*-._,_.-*'"'*-._,_.-*'"'*-._,_.-*'"'*-. Just a quick thingy abt myself. My name's Samantha Santa Maria. And right now am sweltering in the heat of my native Singapore. I've been a Roth fan since 1991, when I saw him & Gary Oldman in Rosencrantz & guildenstern. Have since kept my eyes eagerly peeled for him and have never been disappointed. OH! I think he's the best Van Gogh on screen ever (take a hike, Kirk Douglas!). Am anxiously crossing my fingers for Tim & the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Later all! Thanks Jen for starting this fan list. I have been so frustrated in my search for Tim Roth info on the Web, there's really nothing out there. Now all us fans can help each other out. I've been a huge fan of Tim's ever since I saw Reservoir Dogs. I have seen all the Tim Roth movies that I can find at my local video stores. But, after seeing the Internet Movie Database listing of all of Tim's films I realize that there are lots of his movies that I haven't seen. The one I am most desperately searching for is Captives which also stars Julia Ormond. It was released in the UK last year and I think is out on video there now. It never came out here in the U.S. but I read in Entertainment Weekly that it will be released this summer. Are there any Tim fans on this list who live in the UK and who could tape Captives for me? The other movie I'm looking for was a tv movie from 1993 also starring Brian Dennehy called Murder in the Heartland. Does anyone have this taped? If so, could you dub it for me? I am so excited about corresponding with other fans. Tim is the most incredible actor on the face of the earth. Are we all going to be cheering for him on Oscar night? Yes! I hope to be hearing from all the other Tim Roth fans out there. Lisa ldiedric@du.edu P.S. Check out the latest issue of GQ, there are 4 incredible pictures of Tim modelling for Prada. There is one Prada ad of Tim in Details as well. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Mar 1996 08:45:46 -0800 (PST) From: "Jennifer H. We need more questions and answers, so post what you think might be interesting to add (we also know his height, which is 5'7", but I didn't know if that was a frequently-asked-question or not.). SAG Awards - when was this broadcast? what channel? does anyone know if it will be rebroadcast? I keep hoping that Tim will be interviewed on tv shows since the Oscars are just around the corner. Here's the lowdown, from the 2/8 issue of my weekly e-mail movie publication, The Movie Report. E V E N T S 2/2/96 -- Tim Roth at UCLA The very talented Tim Roth, best known for his roles in Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Four Rooms, and Rob Roy, was honest, open, and all-around charming during his appearance for the Campus Speakers program, unlike last week's aloof Oliver Stone. Although a number of questions were of the "What was it like to work with...?" variety, Roth obviously enjoyed himself, making that goofy Ted the bellhop expression (which I could not help but laugh at) giving a number of interesting insights into his work and himself in general. On Four Rooms: "I enjoyed making that film much more than I did watching it; I hate what they did to it in the editing room." Fave Four Rooms director: Alexandre Rockwell. On Quentin Tarantino: "Working with Quentin is like coming home." On the secret to working with Madonna: "You have to get in her face. Too many people tiptoe around her." On THE QUESTION: "A battery and a lamp." To a fan who said he saw Reservoir Dogs 12 times: "You're sick." Secret to a good audition: "Get drunk." Hobbies: Playing pool and drinking. Favorite drink: Light beer at a bar; tequila "when I really want to get drunk." On nude scenes: "I'll never show my willie to anyone." He related a couple of interesting anecdotes, the most intriguing being one about the Four Rooms wrap party, during which he got drunk and put on Madonna's black rubber dress and sang "Like a Virgin." One of the funniest happenings at the event was when a guy offered him a role in a student film right then and there. Amused, Roth said, "That was really cool. I don't condone it, but that was cool." "Cool" would probably best describe him. As soon as the Q&A session was over, I was the only person to approach the stage, asking him to sign one of his Rob Roy trade ads. He gladly obliged. Seeing that he did in fact sign, a crowd then came to the stage, and he signed for every single person. I gave him a letter, and he accepted it, thanking me a couple of times, right when I gave it to him and as he made his exit behind the curtain, holding it up and smiling at me. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Michael Dequina "has-been former award-winning film critic" mrbrown@ucla.edu Visit Mr. Brown's Movie Site at: http://www.tripod.com/~MrBrown/ "If I wasn't a filmmaker, I'd probably be a film critic." --Quentin Tarantino ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Jennifer H. Honestly, I think I went into Four Rooms knowing it was going to be four directors screwing around for two hours, and so I got what I expected. A particularly twisted brand of toilet humor - it catered to the part of me that occasionally (i.e. rarely) thinks Jim Carrey is funny, but considerably more clever, IMHO. As far as Tim goes - the character was such a cartoon to begin with, I think he was dead on. It also had a lot to do with how he was *directed* by the four - Rockwell let him get away with too much mugging, I thought, but the others weren't bad. He was amazing in Rodriguez's piece, but that was just the best segment period, so go figure! ;-) XXXOOO Nicole - Oh, and he was brilliant in Murder in the Heartland, too. He tim roth is just extremely energetic and charismatic...i think it's just what separates natural actors froim those who try really hard nbut just don't have "the thing" that makes something on screen appear thta real. however, tim also keeps his own personality within the role. every tim character is inherently tim...even his character in rob roy. i think in four rooms...he played someone different than he ever had before, but still seemed to tap into that playful flamboyancy...i think tim roth has discovered in his last few films how fun flamboyance can be and is playing with it. because. he was just great in rob roy...and ted the bellhop is just as over the top without being quite as foppish. oh...and there's this amazing kiss in the film four rooms...ack..it just sent chills. :) anyway, i think a few of my faves are rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead (brilliant acting and one of the best examples of modern absurdist theater), reservoir dogs, and bodies rest and motion. nick is the best part of that film. gen ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Mar 1996 16:02:58 -0800 (PST) From: "Jennifer H. Quote: "I think it's absolute rubbish, this stuff of 'I went and lived in a box in the tundra for two years to get into character.'" Did you know . . . He studied to become a sculptor. His first role was the title part in a stage musical based on Dracula. He drew raves from veteran gangster actor Marc Lawrence after they worked together in Four Rooms. His first film role, in the controversial 1983 film Made in Britain, had him sporting a shaven head and a small swastika between the eyebrows. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Mar 1996 16:16:53 -0800 (PST) From: TE7441667@v9001.ntu.ac.sg To: Tim Roth List Subject: Re: What is so special about Tim Roth? He doesn't exactly bounce off the screen, but he's got a presence that grows on you. I've been watching Tim for years, and he only really came 'alive' for me in Four Rooms -- Roth had me laughing so hard I fell out of my seat in the theater! My faves: Four Rooms naturally (have to concur that Rodriguez's piece was the best and Tim was at his peak in that one, love all his tics and the way he walks) Ros & Guil Are Dead: 2 of my fave actors -- oldman and roth in one movie! This is the definition of pure bliss! Real funny stuff with Rothp playing a great straight man. Vincent & Theo: Like I said , after watching Tim there is no other who can play Van Gogh. Rob Roy: Tim had the best lines in the movie (I'm being sarcastic here) but he pulls them off nicely. The final swordfight had me gripping the armsrests. Good idea, I'd like to know what other actors aside from the great Tim Roth we all find appealing. I have to agree with Hyo here about Russell Crowe - he's great. I've only seen him in Quick and the Dead but I am going to rent Virtuosity soon and see his villain (I've heard he's great in that). Brad Pitt is revolting in my humble opinion. Keanu Reeves is a talentless dodo (also IMHO), and Hugh Grant is just a wus. (a good kind of homework *grin*) Just a note: TV guide this week has a blirb on the Oscars and a small pic of Tim. It talks about how he didn't have a tv until he was 10 years old and now his son will see it in the UK, live. Finally I know that there are people out there who admire Tim Roth as much as I do. Some people I talk to don't even know who he is! Well, I guess I should tell you all a bit about myself. I'm 18 and the only one on this list from Canada. The First movie I saw Tim in was Resevior Dogs. LOVED IT!! I have the soundtrack for it. Next was R & G are Dead. LOVED IT!! I thought that it was brilliantly directed and written, and the chemistry between him and Gary Oldman made the movie hillarious! Pulp Fiction: LOVED IT!! Went out and bought the soundtrack. What else have I seen him in? I haven't seen Little Odessa or Four Rooms yet. Rob Roy! I have to say it was a bit disturbing seeing Tim in a wig, but it was a great performance! I seem to like the unusual characters in movies. That's why I like Tim. He portrayes slighly psychotic, half-witted characters with wit, charisma, and Brit humour. Other actors that make me melt: Eric Stoltz (definitely!), Micheal Madsen, Daniel Day-Lewis, John Malkovich and Gary Oldman. Actors that make me want to move to Mars: Stephen Baldwin, Jim Carrey, and anyone from Melrose Place. That's it for now! I shall attempt to give a summary of what's available here in England. Captives is available to buy, although I myself have an ex-rental copy which I bought prior to the sell-thru release. It's pretty good, and being a male, it does have the added bonus of Julia Ormond! Tim's character is dark and moody - is this like Tim's own personality? As far as other movies that are available, these include: Made in Britain, Meantime (with Oldman), The Cook The Thief etc., Vincent and Theo, Rosencrantz and Guildernstern are Dead, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Heart of Darkness, Captives. I'm doing this from memory, so I've probably forgotten quite a few! It's not too hard to find copies of ex-rental films which are not listed above. I myself, in addition to those listed, have aquired: The Hit, A World Apart, To Kill a Priest, Jumping at the Boneyard, Murder in the Heartland, Bodies Rest and Motion. Again, I wouldn't take this as the definitive list. Also on rental at the moment are Little Odessa and Rob Roy, both of which I've seen for sale in video stores. I've not got them yet, due to lack of funds! Other videos I have include TV recordings of the Tales from the Crypt episode and the Agatha Christie movie 'Murder with Mirrors', in which Tim plays a strange man called Edgar! Anyway, hope this helps Yours Karl. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Mar 1996 08:16:55 -0800 (PST) From: LISA A DIEDRICH To: Tim Roth List Subject: Re: a bit about me Message-Id: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII >> was 4 rooms that bad? > >I loved Four Rooms!!!! Maybe, being a Tarantino fan, I had super high expectations (but I still think Tarantino's bit was the only truly good part of the movie). Eek - I forgot about Jumpin' at the Boneyard! Such a depressing flick - almost up there with Little Odessa, but not quite. Alexis Arquette is amazing in that, he nearly steals the show from Tim (Tim's character isn't all that interesting, for one thing - though he looks gorgeous with a goatee in the film. Hay-soos marimba!) It also brings me down because of Danitra Vance (former SNL), who died of cancer not long after making the film. I can't believe I am subscribed to another list-serve (on 3 already: Nick Cave list, 4AD list and Museum discussions!)...But I was thrilled to have the opportunity to join. I was first introduced (knowingly) to Tim in VINCENT AND THEO which is probably my number 1 as it holds cross interst for me with art history and well, of course, good acting/director. As an art history major (undergrad and grad) in college I took numbers of classes in cinema studies (actually became an obsession). With the plethora of bad actors in the industry, it has been very rewarding watching Tim develop (a natural). And for the most part his judgment on roles to play have been on target. Since V & T, I quickly began amassing as much info on him as possible and trying to get my hands on anything and everything. And of course, sitting and waiting for his movies to be released. Some have taken too long! Being in the US, I haven't seen everything (15 out of the 24 on the Internet Movie Database!) and have missed a few things such as the mini-series MURDER IN THE HEARTLAND and the TALES FROM THE CRYPT episode. I have a decent bibliography on him if anyone is interested. A few questions before I sign off: How long has this list existed? When is the release date of the Woody Allen thingy (another smart film project!)? Oh, and sorry to take up so much time/space/bandwith...but another appealing factor for me (outside of the fact that he is completely beautiful) are his political views! And finally, does anyone on the list have any interest in working in the film industry in any fashion (primarily on an independent level)? Article and interview taken from the April '95 issue of "Premiere" magazine: Growing up in London, Tim Roth was a Sex Pistols fan. When he and his young punk pals went to the legitimate theater, they giggled, set off stink bombs, and harassed the actors. It's no wonder that when Robert Altman cast him as Vincent Van Gogh in "Vincent and Theo", Roth decided to play the mad painteras a cross between Jesus Christ and Sid Vicious. Michael Caton-Jones, who directed Roth in "Rob Roy", calls him a "sweaty little oik"-cockney slang for hooligan. Dismissive of actorly pretense, Roth likes parts in which he can be a troublemaker: He played a petty robber in "Pulp Fiction", serial killer Charlie Starkweather in the miniseries "Murder in the Heartland", a dying undercover cop in "Resevoir Dogs", a squirrelly boyfriend in "Bodies, Rest and Motion", and a hit man for the Russian Mafia in the new film "Little Odessa". Due out this month, "Rob Roy" is a Scottish Robin Hood-style drama starring Liam Neeson as the fiercly independant leader of a clan, and Jessica Lange as his strong-willed wife. Roth is a cold-blooded, dandyish swordsman who steals from the local marquis, puts the blame on Neeson, then ravages his wife and stalks him through the foggy Scottish countryside. Wearing a powdered wig and knee breeches, Roth gives his character an aura of foppish self-amusement --he's thrilled by his own careless cruelty. "Tim reminds me of De Niro," says Caton-Jones, who directed the American actor in "This Boy's Life." "He's not going to play it safe. He doesn't suffer from insecurity like a lot of young American actors. And I knew he could bring a great nastiness to the role." Roth made films with both Mike Leigh and Stephen Frears (and played opposite Gary Oldman in "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead") before coming to America. After driving up in a grungy late-model Mustang that he's nicknamed the hooligan-mobile, the 33-year old Roth, a wiry, good-natured bloke brimming with nervous energy, holds court at a corner table in his neighborhood bar. Wearing a white t-shirt and khakis, he quaffs beer and smokes cigarettes as he talks. SO WHAT'S THE BEST THING ABOUT PLAYING A VILLAIN? - It's just juicy. I've never really played a goody in the traditional sense. Anyway, I don't think that I look the part of a heroic character, especially not in Hollywood, so they never really come up. On a childish level, villains are just more fun. DO YOU EVER GET CAUGHT UP IN HAVING TO DRAW ON SOME DARK SIDE OF YOURSELF? IS IT ALL JUST FUN, EVEN WHEN YOU'RE PLAYING A KILLER LIKE CHARLIE STARKWEATHER? - That did require research, which I like to do. It was pretty hard on my wife to come back on Christmas Eve and there's pictures of mutilated bodies all over the place. DID YOU DO A LOT OF RESEARCH TO PLAY YOUR VILLAIN IN "ROB ROY"? - I didn't do anything, really. The only thing Michael Caton-Jones said was, "There's no such thing as over the top with this character, so the bigger you can go and the more outrageous you can be, the better." That was very hard for me, because I'm used to playing characters where you have more subtlety. This is a very loud performance, and at the beginning, I really hated being in the film. WHY? - Because it went against everything that I believed in about acting. I thought I was going to get fired at one point. I thought, They can't possibly be liking this. I was on the phone with my agent, saying, "Oh God, this is terrible what I'm doing." But, by the end, I was loving it. You couldn't get me out of the door for as many bows--as much flourish-- as I could put in. MICHAEL CATON-JONES SAID HE WANTED YOU TO PLAY IT AS VERY BROAD COMEDY--LIKE THE ACTORS IN THE "CARRY ON" SERIES, TERRY-THOMAS AND CHARLES HAWTREY. - Very, very broad. Over-the-top, caricatured English. By the end of the film, it was like, "Okay, I'm going to give you a Hawtrey in this scene, a touch of Terry in this one, and a drag queen in this one." BUT WHAT ABOUT THE RAPE SCENE IN THE FILM? WASN'T THAT A LITTLE BIT TENSE? - I have trouble with actors saying how difficult and how intense acting is. The reality of it is that there's a guy down below the table (on which the rape occurs) trying to brace so it doesn't slide across the floor. As soon as they said "cut", we were laughing our heads off. ARE YOU AND CATON-JONES FRIENDS FROM YOUR DAYS IN ENGLAND? - We actually met in a pub in London when he was doing "Scandal". We wanted to do a film together about motorcycle messengers in London. Then I didn't see him for years until I came to L.A. and we became drinking buddies. One day he sent me the script for "Rob Roy". It was good guys and bad guys, but it had a character I could really develop, so after he squared it with the studio, it was, "Okay, let's go and have a party in Scotland." JUDGING FROM THE MOVIES YOU'VE MADE, I'D GUESS YOU GREW UP WATCHING A LOT OF MARTIN SCORSESE FILMS. - We all did. I think I saw "Taxi Driver" ten times. I saw William Friedkin's "The French Connection" ten times. I saw "Mean Streets" and "Raging Bull". I took my mom to see "Raging Bull" when it came out, and she said it was the best film she'd ever seen about women, which I thought was a great take on it. YOU GREW UP IN A MIDDLE-CLASS NEIGHBORHOOD IN THE SOUTH OF LONDON. WHAT WAS IT LIKE? - Very quiet. Margaret Thatcher has got a house there--that's the kind of place it was. It was a predominantly white neighborhood, but I went to school in a black neighborhood, so I got both sides. HOW DID YOU END UP GOING TO SCHOOL IN A BLACK NEIGHBORHOOD? - I failed all my exams to get into the posh schools. I just wasn't bright enough-or I didn't study. I was terrible. Until I got into acting, I never did any homework. But I don't think I'd be an actor if I'd gone to one of those fancy schools. YOU TRIED OUT FOR A PLAY IN HIGH SCHOOL, ALMOST AS A LARK? - I went along with a mate of mine as a joke, and then the woman who was running the drama department said, "All right, you're on". She gave me the lead in it, which was Dracula. I was so scared that I actually wet myself the first time I went out onstage--literally pissed myself. But once I got through the first performance, I realized that this was something I really wanted to do. I don't know why--if it's just applause or the ability to make somebody laugh or whatever. Acting was the first place where I suppose I began to focus. AS A KID GROWING UP IN LONDON, YOU MUST HAVE BEEN INFLUENCED BY THE PUNK MOVEMENT. - It was completely liberating. It was like a big "Fuck you!" to everybody. It was primarily left-wing, which was also liberating, because our country is very right-wing. I remember watching the Sex Pistols on TV when I came home from school--I think it was Johnny Rotten and Siouxsie Sioux from the Banshees--and they started swearing and the guy interviewing them got fired for provoking them. It was a wonderful time. It was like saying, "Ugly is beautiful, everything you taught us is wrong." Our hormones were flying. THAT'S WHEN YOU'D BE TAKEN TO THE THEATER AND THROW STINK BOMBS AND MISBEHAVE? - I remember once they had to stop the show and say, "Now either be quiet or get out!" Later on, I actually worked with one of the actors we had harassed. Alan Howard-- he was in "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover". I never talked to him about it.(Grins) But I kill him in the film. YOU COME FROM A BACKGROUND DIFFERENT FROM THAT OF KENNETH BRANAGH OR HUGH GRANT. ARE THE CLASS DISTINCTIONS JUST AS STRONG IN THE THEATER AS IN OTHER PARTS OF BRITISH SOCIETY? - There are certain plays and films on TV that I would never want to watch, and they tend to involve the upper-class actors or upper-class issues. What was exciting to me about American cinema was that filmmakers like Scorsese set their films in working-class New-York. Those were the characters he followed. That's sadly missing from British films--the Merchant Ivory or Kenneth Branagh kind of films are about wealthy people and their problems. I don't really give a fuck about their problems. Let them hire a shrink. BUT DID IT NARROW YOUR CAREER POSSIBILITIES? - In my mind, only to the good, because i was never considered for those roles. They thought, Well, he's just an oik. Then again, look at Gary Oldman: He comes from a very working-class background and now he's playing Beethoven. We'll get our turn--we just have to work a little harder to get it. WAS THERE A KINSHIP BETWEEN YOUNG ACTORS WHEN YOU WERE STARTING OUT IN LONDON? - No, there wasn't any network of actors or Brat Pack thing like you had here. Every actor who was coming up was incredibly jealous of the next guy because there was so little work around. It was like, "Fuck you! I want It!" I GATHER YOU DIDN'T THINK MUCH OF L.A. WHEN YOU FIRST MOVED HERE. - I hated it. All I knew about it was meetngs with studio executives and parties I had to go to. I had no friends. It was a very tough time--I felt like a fish out of water. I didn't think I could ever succeed out here, and it all seemed incredibly superficial. And, on top of that, I couldn't drive--I used to have to pay someone to drive me around. SO WHAT CHANGED? - The first person to really look after me--apart from my agent, who's a wonderful woman--was Sean Penn. He called me and the very notion of him even being on the phone with me was scary because he was someone I really admired. But finally I called him back because I didn't know anybody else. He showed me around: He took me to a great bar; he introduced me to Harry Dean Stanton. The first time I met Sean, he was talking to me about Rimbaud and poetry and Ethiopia and filmmaking. And once you've got friends, L.A. can be a great place to be. HAVE YOU EVER TAKEN A PART FOR THE MONEY? - Oh yeah. I'd been here doing films for very little money up front and a back-end deal you'd never see--you virtually paid to be in them-- and I got to the point where I couldn't pay the next month's rent. So I called up my agent and said, "I've got to do something. I can't make the rent." She got me a job, and I did it for the money. ARE YOU ONE OF THESE ACTORS WHO JUST HAS TO WORK? - I get very antsy. I sit in bars and shoot pool and read books and wait for the next job. I can't stop. I love it too much. It's compulsion. *************** misc. quotes: "There is an aspect of the English coming over here and being incredibly English and getting away with it." says Roth. "because it's the kind of thing Americans like. That is why they go to England and stand outside Buckingham Palace.' "The American film industry is like a car industry--cheap and cheerful. I try to make films that are exciting to me. It's purely selfish. I do them because they're films that I'd want to go see myself." Here's a question for everyone, since we all seem to be true film buffs, I'd like to know what each of you think are the best/your favorite films ever made. We all obviously have great taste in movies, since of course we all worship Tim Roth, so I'm interested to know what other films you all recommend... I'd like to know your 10 favorite movies, and since we all know that we love all of Tim's movies let's keep the Tim Roth films to a limit of 3 on your list (otherwise all 10 would be of Tim's movies, at least on my list!) So here goes for my top 10 list and they aren't in any particular order, this list could easily be 20 but I'll try to limit myself: A Clockwork Orange Cat People Performance Reservoir Dogs The Deer Hunter The King of New York The Man Who Fell to Earth Mean Streets The Hunger Pulp Fiction (runners up include Videodrome, Salvador, Taxi Driver, O! I tried to buy the movie so that I could get a copy of the cover (which has a great Tim picture on it!) but it's no longer available for sale. So, I guess I'll have to find it at a grocery store rental place and make a copy of it there (fat chance!). I'll let you know if I come across anything. If he'd lost the award to anyone else but Kevin I would've been miffed. He looked so nervous when he was waiting to hear the announcement! I'll have to go home tonight and watch the E! preshow (which I taped but only watched part of) since Gina said that Joan Rivers interviewed Tim as he was walking in (poor Tim!). Secondly, TO KILL A PRIEST is available in the states on video...I had to call about 8 video stores in my area before I found it...it was actually 30 miles from my home but luckily a few miles from where I work so...It is o.k. I am not much of a Christopher Lambert fan...the story is political and all...well, I have to say I was really moved by A WORLD APART of which Tim's part is really small but he does a little dance in one scene...but the story is good and it has a strong message about Apartheid vs. the progressive movement of South Africa... What is FARENDJ of 1990...is it British t.v.? No one has it anywhere...Also I have not found (and I persume are BBC or something): THE PERFECT HUSBAND or MURDER WITH MIRRORS... * Harper's Bazaar, November 1992, "Of Dogs and Men," p. 56.
* Sight and Sound (British film magazine), December 1992, "The Mens Room," p. 4-6 or 7. * Mademoiselle, September 1994, "Bad-boy Actor," p. 104. * G.Q. There is also the picture of Harvey Keitel about to kiss Tim that has no article but was in US magazine, June 1995, p. 14. Unfortunately, I do not have the source of the small picture from BODIES, REST, and MOTION that I stole out of Dr.s office...it looks like it is from Entertainment Weekly (by style of article) and the article is titled "X-Ploits," and it talks about Generation X type films of which BR&M is mentioned and the picture is of Tim kissing Bridget Fonda (not Phoebe Cates like I said) and is on page 38 but the page doesn't say which magazine or when...like I said probably E.W. and around time of the release of the movie ('92?)...the MURDER IN THE HEARTLAND publicity picture probably came out of Entertainment Weekly as well but, again, I didn't tear the whole thing so it is missing that pertinent information. It has the whole cast (Randy Quaid and Brian Denehy and the chick who I forgot)...Tim has bleached blonde hair in a small pompodor (sp?)/no article with it. I have some newspaper citations that I will try and post...I haven't looked for them on microfiche or anything so I don't know how good they are but I did a periodicals library search on CD-rom to get a list and haven't ever went forth to find... (To find it, go to the pictures section, then go to the second page of pictures, and click on the "Tales from the Crypt" Section) I also found places to order copies of "Bodies, Rest & Motion", and added those to the webpage as well. (Follow the same directions as above, except click on the BR&M section). Web Page update: I changed the menu on the entry page, and found some more pictures to add to the pictures section. I also semi-completed most of the movie info sections, so there's more there than just the names of the movies. If you can think of anything that we can add to the page, let me know. Soon you will all be able to say "In my day on the Tim Roth Mailing List..." Welcome to everyone who has joined in the past few days. I thought that I would attempt to stimulate some discussion by expounding on which character that Tim has played has been my favorite. I've seen Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Vincent & Theo, Bodies, Rest, & Motion, and Rosencrantz & Guildestern are Dead, and out of these, I like Tim the most as Mr. Orange in Reservoir Dogs. This does not necessarily mean that I like the Character of Mr. Orange the best, but that I liked the way Tim did Mr. Orange the best. My favorite part of Reservoir Dogs (and the part that not very many people cite as their favorite, for some reason - I suppose the "action" scenes overshadow it) is the Commode Story. I love how each different part of this story is shown on a different point in the overall story - first on the rooftop (? alley/wherever) when he gets the story from Holdaway, then to his apartment when he's practicing it, then to the graffitied wall where he's dress-rehearsing it, then to the bar where he's telling it to Joe, Nice Guy Eddie, and Mr. White, and finally to the part where he's actually "in" the story. It's great to see Tim/the Character progress from the beginning, where he doesn't seem to understand why he has to memorize a 4 page story, to the end, where he actually lives the story. The movie shows him stumbling over "making it his own" in his apartment, and his development of all the mannerisms that go along with the story. This is what is probably in all Tim Characters that makes him a good actor - they are believable characters (I guess that's why they call him a "character actor"). It's all the details in this part of the movie - his slouching against the wall in the beginning of the story, his exclamation, "I'm trying to watch 'The Lost Boys'!", and "I don't even know what $10-worth looks like". This is also a crucial part of the movie, because his inclusion in the "heist" hinges on whether or not he can impress/convince Joe Cabot that he's a legitimate thief, and not an undercover cop. I even love the 4 LA County Sheriffs BSing in the bathroom. I think a lot of my liking this particular Tim Character the most has to do with the way that it was shot (that graffiti wall is just great, as is the slow-mo of him pressing the hand-dryer), but also has a lot to do with the way that Tim is able to make the character believable. So, those are my reasons on the intellectual level (of course, we also get the bonus of seeing Tim in the tank-top/undershirt and leather jacket! Whoo!). Which Tim characters are your favorites and why? Jennifer =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Jennifer H.
