Way before we got it here. It's the first time I ever thought that Julia Ormond could act...she has shown no evidence of it otherwise! Not to mention that any actors that can make a love scene set in a disgusting public bathroom erotic...I was impressed. You know how boring the sex scenes in most films are - this one was quite different. I recommend the film for the same reasons Melinda did -- it's not the world's best but there is some intriguing acting, especially by Mr. Tim. The plot is really silly - Ormond is a dentist (!!!???) doing volunteer work in a men's prison..yeah, like they'd let someone that looks like her mess around with those guys and their teeth. Roth is one of the inmates & they have some fun while she's filling his teeth...he needs lots of appointments, of course.. anyhow just wanted to let you know you're not the only one who has seen it. the film has been out in NYC for a while now. I think the only reason they released it here in the US at all is because Julia Ormond has become a big star since it was made in 94. If you check the miramax site on the web they have a bunch of stills of the movie -- http://www.miramax.com/alpages/captivdl.html There are some other Roth pages on the web including one on Little Odessa that has a bio on him (http://www.glf.com/odessa/odcastb.htm) There's also one where the wallpaper is composed entirely of pictures of Roth. Pretty amusing! (http://bbs.mpcs.com/~kjordan/index 2.html) There are a ton of others relating to Four Rooms, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, etc. You can do an altavista search and come up with about 13 pages of related material. cheers, Valerie ------------------------------ Date: 31 May 96 12:44:25 From: mmlile@facstaff.wm.edu (liles melissa m) To: timrothfan@u.washington.edu Subject: re: A World Apart Message-ID: <9605311701.AA19297@facstaff.wm.edu> Tim's part in WORLD APART is a small speaking role, but he shows up and utters a few things here and there, you see him much more than you hear him...I liked the movie a whole lot, in fact I cried (probably because I am a Virgo)...but at any rate, I cried, it is a touching story of a little girl's life in South Africa, it is pretty good in terms of an anti-Apartheid statement as well...plus you get to see a few seconds of Tim doing the twist at a party, which is very cute as he has a pretty good swivel, if you know what I mean, wink, wink...nudge, nudge... I don't remeber his name in WORLD APART, I got caught up with the story...the complete opposite of how I felt when watching TO KILL A PRIEST, if if wasn't for Tim and his bad ass self, I wouldn't have really wanted to watch the whole thing...Didn't like Christopher Lambert at all in it? Hopefully it will reappear, otherwise I'll have to wait for video. I think the Woody Allen movie is set to be release in December. So, for you creative types, what would happen if various Tim characters met each other? Who would win a fight between Archie from Rob Roy and Joshua Shapira from Little Odessa? I suppose it depends on the type of fight... Jennifer =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Jennifer H. But, if you disarmed them both and set out for a fight, I personally put my money on Archie. Josh would have no chance. As for an actual swordfight, well, only Rosencrantz (or Guildenstern) would qualify to compete and taking for granted that he could find the right end of the sword, he might amuse Archie before he was dispatched quickly and pain fully. I guess it used to be called "Hoodlums", and now it's called "Gangster": According to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, Vanessa Williams (Eraser) is in final negotiations with UA to play the female lead in GANGSTER, opposite Tim Roth and Laurance Fishburne. I also got my copy of Detour magazine with Tim Roth on the cover, and I will work on typing and scanning this week. One thing the article mentions is that his father's real last name was Smith, but he changed it to Roth (before Tim was born). There are some good pictures, although a few are a bit grainy (on purpose), which might not make good scanning, but we'll see! In short, was it possible to do what Roy did to > win??? I understand his advantage of brute strength compared to his > opponent, but could anyone hold on without simply slicing off fingers?? Answering as not only a fencer, but also a longtime 16th/17th Century reenactor, this scene was quite realistic. The fight choreography was done by William Hobbes, who is considered to be the best of the best. you can see more of his brilliant and very accurate work in: The Princess Bride Three Musketeers/Four Musketeers (the ones with Michael York) Dangerous Liasons (marvelous smallsword duel at the end) Cyrano (with Gerard Depardieu) The Duellists (this film is the very cream of the crop, duel-wise) Tim Roth's Late Rapier/Small Sword was definitely keenly edged, but as Liam Neeson got a good grip on the unmoving blade, and the friction of bare skin on the flat sides kept Archie from pulling the blade back out of his grip, Roy would obviously have suffered deep cuts to his fingers, but they would not have been cut off... This bespeaks of grave desperation on Rob Roy's part, combined with extreme hatred of Archie, with Tim Roth's ego undoing him at the end...Very satisfying for the audience!!! The irony is that Archie could easily have skewered Roy on at least three or four occasions, but wanted to keep playing with him. In an unarmoured duel, the lighter sword in the hands of a professional had the greater advantage, but the broadsword only needs to get one good cut in and then... Is Tim Roth British or American? Tim Roth is British, but often plays an American in the movies that he is in and does a convincing-enough American accent that many people think that he is American. He works closely with his dialogue coach, Suzanne Celeste, before/during most of his movies. 3. Is Tim Roth married? Does he have any kids? Where does he live? Yes, to Nikki Butler, a fashion designer he met at a film festival, from 1993 - present. They were married in in Central America while Tim was working on "Heart of Darkness". She likes 19th century costumes, and was the inspiration for his "Rob Roy" character. They have one child, a son named T. Hunter Roth (After Hunter S. Thompson and Hunter Carson), who is less than 1 year old. Tim also has a son named Jack who is around 10 years of age. He currently lives in Silverlake district of Los Angeles. 4. How old is Tim Roth? He was born on 14 May 1961 in London England - you do the math. 5. How can I write to Tim Roth? Tim Roth c/o IFA Talent Agency 8730 Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles CA 90069 USA or Tim Roth c/p Markham and Froggatt 4 Windmill Street London, W1P 1HF ENGLAND 6. What is the deal with the tattoos? It is said that Tim Roth bears tattoos on his right arm for significant events in his life, and that he currently has 5 such tattoos. Two of the tattoos are for the births of his sons, one is for his wife Nikki, and one says "P.E.R.I.S.H." 7. Do Tim and Gary Oldman really write messages to each other on their bodyparts? Yes. This is because, according to Tim, that's the best way they can communicate with each other with their busy lives. Some history: In some magazine interview, Gary Oldman was asked to name certain people who he found to be attractive, Tim Roth being one of them. Tim must have read this, because Tim wrote something on his arm (or his head?) that read something along the lines of "G.O. I think you're sexy". Oldman then wrote on his belly, "Tim Roth I think you're sexy too". And then in the June 1993 issue of Detour, Tim wrote on his forehead, "Gary Oldman Lets Do It". In a more recent version of Bikini magazine, Eric Stoltz is covering a girl's breasts that read, "Tim Roth - Stop Writing On Your Face!!!". The next page of this article has Eric Stoltz smoking a cigar, frowning, with the following written on his forehead: "Tim Roth ?" 8. What kind of music/books does Tim like? Tim has stated that he enjoys most music, but some bands that he has singled out are "Rage Against the Machine", "The Sex Pistols", and "Siouxsie and the Banshees". Tim is an avid reader, more interested in books than magazines. He reads more nonfiction than fiction, particularly turn of the century books. He has a subscription to the Manchester Guardian. 9. Does Tim surf the Internet? Sadly, no. He has stated "I don't know a bloody thing about computers." 10. What awards has he been nominated for and/or won? 1984: Won the Evening Standard Award for Best Newcomer for his role in Stephen Frears' The Hit. 1995: Nominated for "Best Supporting Actor" Oscar for Rob Roy 1995: Nominated for "Best Supporting Actor" Golden Globe for Rob Roy 1995: British Film and Television Award (BAFTA) for Best Supporting Actor in Rob Roy 1994: San Francisco International Film Festival Piper Heidsieck Award for "independence, courage, risk taking, and the avoidance of the conventional" 10. Where was Tim educated? Dick Sheppard Comprehensive; Camberwell School of Art 11. How tall is Tim? 5'7" 12. What kind of background did Tim come from? Tim likes to propagate the myth that he comes from a lower-middle class family. However, this appears to be untrue. He lived in a "nice" South London suburb (the same one Margaret Thatcher lived in), which was probably middle- to upper-middle class. His father was a journalist and his mother was a landscape painter. He has one older sister. Following in his mother's footsteps he attended art school, but after one year, dropped his sculpting aspirations in favor of acting. 13. I guess this is near his house. So, if you're in the area, I guess it's a place to stake out. Here's their review of "Captives": "Captives is a preposterously unconvincing love story about a prison dentist who falls madly in love with a convict while working on his molars. If the situation is inherently ludicrous, the lack of chemistry between the two stars compounds the problem. Tim Roth has a certain power, but Julia Ormond, who plays the love-starved dentist, is hopelessly at sea." To the person who asked about the Woody Allen movie, I think we've answered most of the questions on this before, but here it is again. It's titled "Everyone says I love you" and is a muscial, and is set to be released in December (late) this year (in the US). Tim does sing. It has a bunch of other people, including Alan Alda, Julia Roberts, and Goldie Hawn - I can't remember the other people off the top of my head. The web page has been added to the newest version of the Quentin Tarantino FAQ (It's at the very bottom, under all the Tarantino WWW pages, there's a Tim Roth section and there we are!), so whoopie! Message-ID: <31D004DA@courier.lmu.ac.uk> Here's the small article I mentioned before, FYI (especially for Nicki!): "Tim Roth (b. 1961) Born in London, an art-school dropout. The bulk of his work in this country has been done for television, a clear indication that in the 80s, when directors like Mike Leigh, Alan Clarke and Stephen Frears were working on the small screen, it was infinitely the more dynamic medium. 'Clarke', he once told Sight & Sound, 'was the King... he made films about real people who were in sad situations.' Roth's debut was as the livewire skinhead in Clarke's coruscating Made In Britain, and he has sought to match this pitch of intensity in his subsequent work. Although he has appeared in British movies (A World Apart, The Cook the Thief His Wife and Her Lover, Captives) he soon turned to the American independent scene (Reservoir Dogs) to find the kind of roles he craves. There's a long-standing tradition, stretching from Ronald Colman to David Niven, of British Screen actors decamping to the US. But it's hard to imagine either Roth or his contemporary Gary Oldman becoming mainstays of the ex-pat cricket team." Geoffrey Macnab, Sight & Sound, July '96, Vol 6, Issue 7, p24 Bye! Wolf" To: Tim Roth List Subject: Tim Roth Biography on Mr. Showbiz Message-ID: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII The Mr. Showbiz web site has finally added a Tim Roth biography section, which can be found at: http://showbiz.starwave.com/starbios/timroth/a.html Here is the "biography" they provide: A SELF-DESCRIBED "low-budget monster," character actor Tim Roth prefers working on thespian-friendly independent films to "whoring" on lucrative yet fluffy studio productions. Roth has slipped his cute-yet-cruel appearance and De Niro-esque intensity under the skin of often violent, always disturbed characters in a steady stream of art-house flicks from such directors as Robert Altman and Quentin Tarantino. Given that his performances are built almost entirely on instinct, it's not surprising that Roth's grittier-than-thou on-screen posturing is rooted in personal experience. Born in 1961 to a journalist father and painter-turned-teacher mother, Roth grew up in a middle-class London neighborhood. (Retired prime minister Margaret Thatcher owns a house nearby.) His left-leaning father is a former Communist who switched the family name from Smith to Roth to proclaim "solidarity" with World War II concentration camp survivors. The Roths divorced when Tim was young, but he nonetheless received what he describes as a "a normal, liberal upbringing," with occasional jaunts to the city's museums and theatres. Although given the opportunity to attend private schools, Roth botched his entrance exams and ended up in the rough-and-tumble public education system, where kids from less-fortunate backgrounds frequently bullied him. High school proved an especially hellish endurance test. Its one high point came when, on a lark, Roth auditioned for the school play--a musical production of Dracula. Cast as the Count himself, sixteen-year-old Roth had a bad case of stage fright and allegedly wet his pants when he walked on-stage during the opening night's performance. After graduation, Roth enrolled at London's Camberwell School of Art to study sculpture, but quit when it became clear eighteen months later that clay and wire paled in comparison to scripts and stages. He continued honing his chosen craft with plays performed in small theatres and pubs. Two years later, in 1983, Roth won his first television role, as a skinhead in the BBC movie Made in Britain. He landed his first feature role, portraying a hit man, in director Stephen Frears' The Hit (1984). Roth solidified a reputation for portraying off-kilter chaps with performances in a series of independent films, notably Peter Greenaway's The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover (1989), Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1990), and Robert Altman's Vincent and Theo (1990). In 1991, Roth jumped stateside to Los Angeles, where he made the acquaintance of aspiring director Tarantino. After a drunken night of bar-hopping, Roth, who as a rule never reads for a role, gave an alcohol-induced audition, and Tarantino cast him in Reservoir Dogs (1992). Tarantino's directing debut made an art-house star out of Roth, who gave an arresting performance as a fatally wounded policeman dubbed Mr. Orange. Tarantino and Roth collaborated two years later with Pulp Fiction (1994); Roth appeared in the bookend role of an edgy restaurant diner. He followed Pulp's accolades with his first part in a movie from--gasp!--a mainstream studio, Rob Roy (1995). Directed by chum Michael Caton-Jones, Roth's turn as the scenery-chewing villain opposite Jessica Lange and Liam Neeson won him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Without hesitation, he returned to independent filmmaking to portray yet another hitman, in Little Odessa (1995), and the plot-connecting bellboy in Four Rooms (1995). Next up, Roth ends his post-baby hiatus with performances as an ex-con seeking reform in No Way Home, and as a junkie in Gridlock, which co-stars Tupac Shakur. The unstudied Roth does not undertake prefilming research or shroud himself in Method-induced motivations. In addition, he shuns glitzy environs and lives in a slightly sketchy section of Hollywood that provides ample doses of character-fortifying urban grime. Roth commemorates significant events in his life with tattoos on his rather crowded right arm. Among the markings are tributes to his fashion designer wife, Nicki Butler, whom he met at Sundance in 1992, and their one-year-old son, T. Hunter Roth. He also sports a tat for son Jack, born eleven years earlier during a previous relationship. With Roth's star still on the rise, you have to wonder how long it will be until he runs out of tattoo space. ------------------------------ End of TIMROTHFAN Digest 63 *************************** TIMROTHFAN Digest 64 Topics covered in this issue include: 1) Intro (fwd) by "Jennifer H.
